If You Like Salty Snacks, This Is Your Love Language

You know that moment when you take your first bite of something so briny, punchy, and rich it makes your eyes close a little? That’s this sundried tomato tuna tapenade. It’s like your favourite olive tapenade went on vacation to the Mediterranean coast, met a dreamy can of tuna, and came home glowing with flavour. In fact, I developed this recipe in an attempt to recreate a tuna spread that I was eating daily while on a trip to Malta. It captured my complete attention and devotion and has been living in my brain rent free ever since.

Why may you ask? Because this spread is:

  • Savory and umami-rich

  • Quick and easy to make (hello, 10-minute snack)

  • Protein-rich

  • Naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and low carb

  • Dangerously addictive, it goes with everything! —don’t say I didn’t warn you

Whether you need a fast appetizer for friends, a sandwich upgrade, or a fridge-friendly meal prep item, this tapenade is your salty new best friend.

🧺 Essential Ingredients

Let’s break it down. You only need a few pantry staples to make this Mediterranean magic happen:

🧂 Non-negotiables:

    • 1 can of high quality tuna in olive oil
(Trust me, olive oil-packed tuna = way more flavor. If you only have water-packed, just add an extra drizzle of good olive oil.)

    • Sundried tomatoes in oil, drained
(Look for the kind packed in olive oil—soft, sweet, tangy, and ready to go.)

    • Olives, pitted
(Or any bold olives you love. Castelvetrano is great if you prefer milder flavor.)

    • Capers
(Little flavor bombs. Don't skip these.)

    • Shallots
(Raw and punchy, without being too "oniony")

    • Lemon juice
(Brightens everything up and adds that sour punch that you'll crave)

    • Extra virgin olive oil
(To help everything blend up into the perfect consistency)

    • Black pepper, to taste

    • Parsley

    • Anchovies (for extra umami, if you're a salt fiend)

    • Dijon Mustard

      ✨ Optional Add-ins:

    • A pinch of red chili flakes or Calabrian chilli for heat
    • Zest of a lemon (for an aromatic finish)

🍴 How to Use It (AKA: Everything It Tastes Amazing On)

Honestly? This stuff goes with everything. But here are some ideas to get you started:

🥖 Party Appetizer Ideas:

  • Slather it on toasted baguette slices

  • Serve with crackers, pita chips, or crostini

  • Use as a dip for raw veggie crudité

🥪 Lunch Upgrades:

  • Spread on your favorite sandwich or wrap

  • Add to a tuna melt for an umami bomb

  • Layer into a Mediterranean grain bowl

🥗 Protein Boost:

  • Dollop onto salads or roasted veggies

  • Use as a topping for grilled chicken or fish

  • Stir into warm pasta with a little pasta water for a no-fuss sauce

🧊 How to Store It

This tapenade gets better as it sits. The flavours meld into something even deeper and more craveable.

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks

  • Give it a stir before serving

  • Optional: top with a thin layer of olive oil to keep it fresh
